I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the "Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development in Island Communities training course, a mobility of youth workers funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ program. The project was implemented by Copernicus Berlin e.V. in collaboration with Together For Youth, and it took
place in the captivating Guadeloupe Island, France. I must say that this experience was truly remarkable and left a lasting impact on me.
The training course was meticulously designed to address the pressing environmental challenges faced by island communities. Throughout the program, the facilitators emphasized the importance of promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in such unique settings. The sessions were engaging, informative, and tailored specifically for youth
workers who were passionate about making a difference in their communities. One of the aspects that impressed me the most was the focus on practical skills and tools. The course not only provided theoretical knowledge about the principles of environmental conservation and sustainable development, but it also equipped us with valuable project management, stakeholder engagement, and monitoring and evaluation skills. These practical tools were essential in understanding how to implement sustainable practices effectively. The organizers did an excellent job of incorporating a variety of learning methods. Classroom sessions and workshops were complemented by visits to local environmental conservation and sustainability projects. These field trips offered us the invaluable opportunity to witness firsthand how the principles we were learning about could be applied in real-world scenarios.
Collaborating with local stakeholders and working on actual projects heightened our understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in island communities. Moreover, the course fostered a sense of community and collaboration among participants. I was fortunate to meet and connect with 33 other youth workers from Germany, Italy, Romania, Lithuania, and France. The diversity of perspectives and experiences enriched the learning environment, allowing us to exchange ideas and form lasting connections. The networking opportunities provided by the project were invaluable in establishing a support system and a global network of like-minded individuals. The impact of this training course on me and my work as a youth worker cannot be overstated.
Armed with the knowledge and skills gained from this project, I feel empowered to make a tangible difference in my own community. By promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development, I can contribute to building a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
