Kotryna’s experience with Erasmus+

If you had to describe your Erasmus+ experience in three words, what would they be?
Improvisation, creativity, and growth.

You have participated in a few projects now, which impressed you the most and why?
It’s difficult to choose, as each project was impressive for different reasons, whether it was the location, activities, or the team. However, I was particularly impressed by the mountainous areas and projects related to active leisure. In one of the projects, we learned the basics of mountaineering and how to use climbing equipment, which was especially useful as we applied this knowledge in the nearby mountains. Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend a training in Iceland and travel around the island after the program ended. The country’s stunning natural beauty made this one of my most memorable experiences.

How do you choose in which projects you want to participate when there are so many of them?
I focus on projects that cover interesting topics, especially those related to sports, health, arts, and technology. I also consider the location — I tend to choose places I’ve never visited or places I’d love to return to. For example, I’ve been to a village in Poland eight times because it holds many beautiful memories and is surrounded by breathtaking nature.

Have you noticed any trends or changes in Erasmus+ projects during your participation?
A growing focus on ecology has been evident in recent projects, with sustainable practices becoming more prominent. For example, reusable cups were provided to each participant to reduce disposable waste. Additionally, some projects have placed a strong emphasis on waste sorting, reducing resource consumption, and overall sustainability. I’ve also noticed that coordinators are always looking for new and more engaging ways to teach and involve participants.

How did you feel while getting ready for your first exchange? How did everything go? Was there anything that scared you?
I was 15 during my first exchange to Finland with my school. I felt a lot of fear and uncertainty — I worried I wouldn’t be able to communicate in English or find common ground with the local youth and my host family. However, it turned out to be the complete opposite! It was an amazing experience that helped me become more independent, improved my language skills, and allowed me to have countless adventures. If I could go back in time, I would dive in without hesitation and encourage others to join me.

Share one of the funniest, most memorable, or unexpected adventures you had while participating in the Erasmus+ project.
There were many unforgettable moments, but one that stands out was when a room caught fire during a project in Slovenia in 2019. My team and I were staying in a beautiful mansion, and we decided to exchange rooms with other participants. They had accidentally left an uncovered lamp on behind a wooden cabinet, and since it was a bright day, no one noticed. Woolen blankets on top of the cabinet caught fire from the lamp’s heat. Thankfully, my team and I had a feeling to go back to the room to grab some things, and we managed to put out the fire before it got worse. Afterward, we moved rooms and continued with the project.

What was the best and most unexpected place you found yourself in during your project travels?
I would say the glacier in Iceland and a town in Sicily were the most unexpected places. In Sicily, we could watch the erupting Etna volcano from the balcony in the evening. I never imagined I’d see such incredible sights with my own eyes.

What skills and knowledge did you gain by participating in the projects? How do they help you in your personal life or career?
I’ve grown significantly as a person. I’m more open to different cultures and experiences, and I now feel more confident in taking on challenges that once intimidated me. I’ve developed a sense of responsibility and independence, and I’m now much better at organizing tasks. The topics of each project — from ecology and politics to geography and personal development — have given me valuable knowledge that has helped me both at university and in my career.

Is there a moment or memory from your Erasmus+ experience you’d love to relive?
I’d love to relive my first encounter with the ocean, volcanoes, glaciers, and all the amazing natural wonders I’ve seen. Additionally, moments of reconnecting with people I met on previous projects are always special.

Have you stayed connected with any of the other exchange participants? (both foreigners and Lithuanians) How did these relationships enrich your life?
I’ve remained in touch with many friends I met through Erasmus+ projects. Some of them have become close friends, while others are work or travel buddies. We visit each other when we can, and each connection has enriched my life in many ways.

What message would you like to convey to those who are considering participating in the Erasmus+ program but are still unsure about it?
Don’t overthink it — just do it! There’s nothing to be afraid of. Whether the experience is good or bad, it’s still a valuable one. If you’ve already heard about the program, why not give it a try? The worst thing that can happen is developing a love for travel and making new connections. After my first solo trip, I couldn’t believe such opportunities existed, and it’s surprising how many young people still miss out on them. Whenever I find time between my studies and work, I always try to “catch a project” somewhere in Europe. So far, I’ve participated in 42 projects, and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

What was the biggest personal growth you felt after this experience?
The biggest personal growth I experienced was transitioning from an introvert to an extrovert, feeling comfortable speaking in front of an audience, and improving my English language skills.

What are your plans now? Do you have any trips or projects planned?
Right now, my plan is to take a break from my last exchange and focus on my studies and work. However, when the time comes, I’m sure I’ll find another project to participate in and explore more of the world.
